Female Foeticide: (Year 2004 & 2005) |
The preference for male children is an embedded feature of Indian society, sanctioned by religion. Sons are considered essential for the continuation of the family's lineage and for the performance of last rites in Hinduism. Thus a family is considered incomplete if it does not have a male child. A woman's status is also raised in the family only when she gives birth to a son. The main cause of this skewed sex ratio is the phenomenon of female foeticide, which is rampant due to the following reasons - desire for a male child, discrimination against girls, the tradition of dowry,- easy detection of the sex of the unborn child,- fall in medical ethics. Mass media campaigns on Preventing Female Foeticide were taken up by us with IMA in 2001 to create awareness in this regard and also to address the traditional mindsets of the people. In addition, we have been official PR for More Than 03 Years. |
